The garden was originally built in 1982 for the International Year of the Disabled. Sir Douglas, a regular visitor to Fife over the course of many years, was invited to the town in 1982. Thus it was named after him - deep in the heart of the Fife countryside Bader himself loved and described as "God's own country."
