Calshot Castle & Activities Centre
Calshot Spit, Fawley, SO45 1BRThe castle is a three story fort situated on a shingle spit at the mouth of Southampton Water. It was a critical element in the improvement of the defences of the south coast by Henry VIII. It was built to protect the entrance to the Solent and thus to the important ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. Its location has meant that it was still fully in operation in both the First and Second World Wars.
