Construction began in 1720 but the key date is 1754 when the house came into the hands of the Landsdowne family, members of which continue to occupy it. It is a beautifully proportioned Georgian home. Especially notable is the Robert Adam wing which contains a splendid library, a sculpture gallery, the Chapel and the orangery, now a picture gallery.
