In 1820, the foundation stone was laid with full Masonic honours by Alexander Boswell, son of James Boswell, the famous biographer. The monument opened to the public in 1823 and has since become a place of pilgrimage for admirers of Scotland’s National Poet and a focus for events celebrating his life and work.
